How Gift Aid Helps Yorkshire Cat Rescue

When you donate to Yorkshire Cat Rescue, you can help even more by using Gift Aid – and it won’t cost you anything extra. Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows charities to claim back an extra 25p for every £1 you donate, as long as you're a taxpayer. So, if you donate £10, Yorkshire Cat Rescue will actually receive £12.50.

Why Gift Aid is Important to Yorkshire Cat Rescue

Gift Aid is a powerful way to make your donation go further. The extra money from the government helps Yorkshire Cat Rescue do more to support the cats and kittens in our care, as well as fund important rescue and rehoming projects. Every extra penny counts, so your Gift Aid contribution can make a real difference in the lives of cats who need it the most.

The Important Rule About Tax

For Gift Aid to work, you need to make sure you’ve paid enough tax in the UK. This is because the government gives charities extra money based on the tax you’ve already paid on your income. If you haven't paid enough tax, the charity won’t be able to claim that extra 25p for every £1 you donate.

For example, if you donate £10, Yorkshire Cat Rescue can claim an additional £2.50 from the government through Gift Aid. To qualify, you must have paid at least £2.50 in Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax during the tax year. If the total Gift Aid claimed on all your donations exceeds the tax you have paid, it is your responsibility to cover the difference.

When Can’t You Use Gift Aid?

There are a few situations where you cannot use Gift Aid. Here are some of the main ones:

1. If You Haven’t Paid Enough Tax

Gift Aid works because the government gives the charity extra money based on the tax you’ve paid. If you haven’t paid enough tax to cover the Gift Aid claim, you can’t use it. For example, if you donate £10 and the charity can claim an extra £2.50, you must have paid at least £2.50 in tax during that tax year. If you haven’t, the charity won’t be able to claim the extra money.

2. Large Lottery Winnings or Inheritance

If you donate money following a large lottery win or inheritance, it’s unlikely you could use Gift Aid. This is because money from lottery winnings or inheritances is not taxed in the same way as income. Therefore, if you donate a large amount, such as a £1 million lottery win, you won’t be able to claim Gift Aid on that donation unless you've paid enough tax through other sources of income to cover the Gift Aid amount.

3. If You’re Not a UK Taxpayer

Gift Aid is only available to people who pay tax in the UK. If you don't pay tax in the UK – for example, if you live abroad or don't earn enough to pay tax – you can't use Gift Aid.

4. Donations Made in Someone Else's Name

Gift Aid can only be used if you are the person making the donation and paying the tax. If you’re donating on behalf of someone else (like a gift on their behalf or in their name), you cannot claim Gift Aid unless that person has also paid enough tax.

This also applies to money you have collected by fundraising. As the money is not solely from you, you cannot use Gift Aid. However, if you’re doing a sponsored event, your supporters and sponsors can Gift Aid their donations to you.

How Can You Make Sure You’ve Paid Enough Tax?

Before you donate, it’s important to check if you’ve paid enough tax for Gift Aid to work. To check if you’ve paid enough tax to cover Gift Aid on your donations, you can follow these steps:

1. Review Your Income Sources - Gift Aid is based on the tax you've paid on your income. The most common sources of income that are taxed are:

  • Wages from your job (income tax is usually deducted automatically from your salary through PAYE)
  • Pension income (income tax may also be automatically deducted)
  • Self-employed income (tax is paid based on your profits)
  • Savings interest (if taxed under the savings allowance)

If you have income from any of these sources, it’s likely that you’ve paid tax on them. You need to make sure that the total tax you’ve paid is at least equal to the amount the charity can claim under Gift Aid for the donations you make.

2. Check Your P60 or Payslip - If you are employed, your P60 (given at the end of the tax year) or monthly payslip will show how much income tax you’ve paid. For example:

  • P60: This document will show your total earnings and the tax you've paid during the year.
  • Payslip: This will show the tax deducted from your pay each month.

If the total tax paid, as shown on your P60 or payslip, is greater than or equal to the amount of Gift Aid you're claiming, you should be fine.

3. Review Your Self-Assessment Tax Return - If you’re self-employed or have other income, the self-assessment tax return will show how much income tax you owe based on your income and expenses. You can check your total tax liability and compare it to the amount of Gift Aid you’re claiming.

4. Check Your Pension or Other Taxable Benefits - If you are receiving a pension, whether from a state pension or a private pension scheme, the tax will usually be automatically deducted. Your pension provider will send you a statement of how much tax has been taken. If you have other benefits or income that are taxed, like rental income, you can check your tax payments against these as well.

5. Look at Your Bank Statements for Taxable Interest - If you earn interest on savings, check your bank statements to see if tax has been deducted.

6. Speak to HMRC or a Tax Professional - If you’re still unsure, you can check your online personal tax account, get in touch with HMRC or with a tax advisor.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you’ve paid enough tax to support Gift Aid on your donations, meaning your charitable contributions will help charities like Yorkshire Cat Rescue even more.

Keeping Track of All Your Donations

Gift Aid applies to all donations you make to any charity throughout the tax year, not just Yorkshire Cat Rescue.

If you donate larger and/or regular amounts to multiple charitable causes, you may find it beneficial to keep a record to keep track of all of your donations to all of the charities you donate to.

By keeping track of your total donations and Gift Aid claims throughout the year, you can ensure that you have paid enough tax. This will give you peace of mind, knowing that you’ve fulfilled your obligations and that all your donations - whether to Yorkshire Cat Rescue or other charities - are properly covered.

Why Gift Aid Matters So Much to Yorkshire Cat Rescue

Gift Aid is absolutely crucial for small charities like Yorkshire Cat Rescue. This is not just a simple donation - it's a lifeline. As a charity that receives no government funding, we depend entirely on the generosity and compassion of people like you. Every penny counts, but with Gift Aid, your donation can go even further, helping us to continue our vital work rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming cats.

Without the extra funds Gift Aid brings, we would struggle to carry out the essential work we do day in and day out. We’re not a large organisation with endless resources; we’re a small team doing everything we can to make a big difference in the lives of cats who desperately need help.

When you donate, please, check if you can use Gift Aid. It won’t cost you anything extra, but it could make an enormous difference. Even just a small donation, with Gift Aid, could be the difference between a cat finding a safe, loving home or staying in need longer than they should.

Please, help us help them. Make sure you’ve paid enough tax, so your gift can go further and continue our mission. Your generosity, combined with Gift Aid, can change lives.

You can either make the declaration online with your payment, or download a separate form for a single donation or for multiple donations.
